POSTER ASSIGNMENT

A world of dew,

And within every dewdrop

A world of struggle.

- A World of Dew by Kobayashi Issa

Posters Assignment: Bio

POSTER 1 - MOUNTAINS OF DEW

For my first poster I used charcoal to draw my design.

For this design I wanted to display struggle within a dew drop breaking through a serene environment. To do this in this piece I used the imagery of a metropolis rising up within the natural environment. As well, the imagery of the mountains also complements the themes of struggle from the haiku.

I chose to use the shape of a diamond instead of an actual water droplet as I believe it creates a more geometric cohesion between it and the rest of the elements in the piece.

Instead of drawing the tips of the mountains I have simply used negative space to create the impression of the tips as I believe it creates a higher contrast between them and the background.

The piece is almost completely symmetrical, this is because I believe that it again creates a sense of cohesion within the piece.

POSTER 2 - SERENITY

For this poster I used a digital medium as I believed it was most fitting for the design of a move poster.
For this design I wanted to focus on the idea of contrast between the film title and the film itself to create an ominous aura around the piece.
The title 'Serenity' is in a sharp, serif font, creating a tension that contrasts to the feelings associated with the word.
The imagery itself is also a direct contradiction to the title, depicting a scene of someone drowning, a very tense and hopeless struggle in the world of water depicted.
I have also used gradating colours within the background, from light blues to almost complete black. This is done to create feelings of dread as the viewer's sight pans down the image.
To help direct the viewers gaze I have also slanted the title as if it too were sinking into the abyss.

POSTER 3

For my last poster I decided to used mixed media, photography and drawing. I chose this as a way to highlight the two layers of perception within the design.
The photography follows a man, alone and surrounded by darkness, I chose this as a way to depict the mundane struggles of everyday life that aren't always recognized.
The drawings follow a man drowning in the middle of the ocean, with no help in sight. I chose this as an obvious struggle with life and death to contrast the other struggle.
The lonely man views the other as he drowns whilst trapped within a rain droplet, but much like his own struggle he does not recognize it as such. As one man drowns and another returns to their lonesome existence, I have the storyboard end on an image of the lonely man trapped within his own droplet so as to emphasize their shared struggle.
